Why is Design Consulting Necessary?

Updated: Jan 22

Through design consulting, I help clients transform their 'core essence' into a powerful visual language that builds trust and resonates with their target audience.

Design work goes beyond creating beautiful outcomes. It serves as a partner that addresses business challenges through Design Thinking. Many small businesses often limit design to isolated tasks. However, design can—and should—be a vital solution in business strategy.

The Impact of Design on Business Success

A prime example is the success of the iMac G3 (the "Bondi Blue" model). This was more than just a successful computer; it was a historical milestone that saved Apple from the brink of bankruptcy and redefined modern industrial design.

At that time, all computers were dull beige boxes. Jonathan Ive’s iMac shattered this stereotype. Its translucent structure, all-in-one casing, organic curves, and vibrant colors created a sensation in the industrial design world. The marketing strategy shifted focus from functional specs (CPU speed, RAM, etc.) to emotional resonance: "You are special because you use this computer." This rebranding transformed the computer from a mere office tool into a medium for self-expression. Allowing consumers to choose colors that matched their personal tastes was also a pivotal success factor.

As a design student in 1998, I vividly remember the stir this design caused. It was the "dream computer" for every student. If someone actually bought one, they became the center of envy, and everyone would flock to see it. Ultimately, the success of this product became the springboard for Apple to evolve into the world’s most valuable company.

The Necessity of Design Management

Design plays a critical role in determining a company's destiny. Implementing Design Management during the early stages of a business is the most reliable strategy for mitigating risk. This approach minimizes trial and error by bridging the gap between "Business Objectives" and "Customer Needs." By translating an abstract vision into a concrete visual language and brand guidelines, an organization can ensure all employees move in the same direction. This consistency creates a unified brand experience for consumers, which ultimately builds lasting trust.

Design consulting can vary significantly across industries (IT, manufacturing, fashion, F&B, etc.), allowing for specialized approaches tailored to each sector.
